The origin, meaning and scope of nationalism is still debated. Yet it continues to be an ideology which preserves its importance in the 21st century. Most studies on the origin of nationalism point to 18th-century Continental Europe and the French Revolution, but it goes back to earlier times. By the 20th century, nationalism played a major role in the succession of empires to nation-states. Nationalism as an ideology that leads to wars, revolutions and social evolutions is one of the most important ideologies of today's world. Globalization theorists claim that nationalism will lose its importance in the postmodern era. Yet during the 20th Century nationalism went through an evolution and managed to integrate with different ideologies. Although there are different definitions about the scope and meaning of nationalism, it should be noted that; the history of the ideology of nationalism is as old as the history of humanity and that it will continue its adventure to the point where human history goes. This study will focus on the origin of nationalism, its meaning for societies, its scope and its dialectical relations with different ideologies in the post-modern era. Additionally, the arguments on nationalism will be analyzed and the roles that are played by the ideology of nationalism in various parts of the world will be discussed.

Kökeni, anlamı ve kapsamı üzerine kesin bir tanıma varılmayan milliyetçilik, 21. Yüzyılda ihtişamını ve önemini koruyan bir ideoloji olmaya devam etmektedir. Genel hatları ile milliyetçiliğin kökenine yönelik çalışmaların büyük çoğunluğu 18. Yüzyıl Kıta Avrupa’sını ve Fransız İhtilalini işaret etse de milliyetçiliğin kökeni daha eski dönemlere gitmektedir. 20. Yüzyıla gelindiğinde imparatorlukların yerini ulus devletlere bırakmasında milliyetçilik ideolojisin büyük bir rol üstlendiği görülmüştür. Savaşlara, devrimlere ve toplumsal evrimlere sebep olan bir ideoloji olarak milliyetçilik, günümüz dünyasının en önemli ideolojilerinden biridir. Özelikle küreselleşme teorisyenlerinin postmodern dönemde milliyetçiliğin anlamını yitireceğinin ifade etmelerine karşın, milliyetçilik 21. Yüzyılda kendini evrime eden ve farklı ideolojilerle entegre olabilme özelliğini gün yüzüne çıkaran bir ideoloji olmuştur. Gün geçtikçe kapsamı ve anlamı konusunda farklı tanımlar ortaya konulsa da vurgulanması gereken en önemli gerçeklik; Milliyetçiliğin tarihinin insanlık tarihi kadar eski olduğu ve insanlık tarihinin gideceği yere kadar serüvenine devam edeceğidir. Nihayetinde bu çalışmada; milliyetçilik ideolojisinin kökenine, toplumlar için ne gibi anlamları olduğuna, kapsamına ve post modern dönemde farklı ideolojilerle olan diyalektik iletişimine dikkat çekilecektir. Ayrıca milliyetçilik üzerine ortaya atılan tezlere değinilecek ve dünyanın farklı bölgelerinde milliyetçilik ideolojisinin üstlenmiş olduğu roller analiz edilmeye çalışılacaktır.
